You need to understand, that Acai berry has a very short life span once it is picked. Fresh Acai berry juice, would be great, but unless you live in the Brazillian Rain Forest, you aren't going to get it.
Within 24 hours of picking the berry, it begins to break down and actually rot. So, its imperative that the berry is preserved.
In order to export Acai berry to the rest of the world, 3 different preservation types have been implemented. These techniquesinclude freeze drying, spray drying or shipping frozen.
Spray drying is by far the least expensive option of the 3. During spray drying, the fruit is heated to very high temperatures to remove all of the moisture. After drying, they coat it with a carrier agent such as malodextrin.
You already know that high heat destroys enzymes and nutrients in your food. We have been taught our entire life how raw vegitables are heathier than cooked.
Spray dried Acai berry powders are usually the least expensive It is the fastest and simplest way to get Acai sent to various parts of the world.
The next option, that you don't seem to see very often is frozen juice. Frozen juice can be a much better choice that spray drying, because the fruit isn't cooked. But it is difficult to find.
Nutrients will however continue to be lost. Freezing may slow down this process, but its not going to stop it entirely.
The most expensive option for shipping Acai berry is freeze drying. In the freeze dried method, the fruit is quickly transported to facilities where they remove the moisture, similar to the goal with spray drying.
However, unlike spray drying, high heat is not used. The moisture is actually removed using a process at a very cold temperature. Around -20 degrees Celsius.
That way the berry continues to contain all of its nutrients because the enzymes are not killed with the high heat. The quality is maintained and the fruit does not rot, because the moisture is removed.
Because this is the slowest process, it is also the most expensive.
It does however preserve all of the health benefits.
Quality varies significantly between the frozen, spray dried and freeze dried products. All products probably produce some benefit, and they all have the same goal of getting Acai berry to your home. But, freeze drying is the most difficult and time consuming, so in most cases you end up paying more as a consumer.
But you also get much more benefit.
Reading the label of your supplement will usually reveal how it was preserved. Most times, you won't see the carrier agents listed. But, it should tell you if it was freeze or spray dried. Especially freeze dried, since companies what to advertise that it is what they are putting out.
Always look for Freeze Dried Acai Berry right on the label. Several companies are producing products, with different preservation means, so you will have to read the label itself. If you can't find the preservation method on the label, the company literature should definately have it.
While it is more expensive, it is going to be worth it.
Like most things, you get what you pay for. And freeze dried Acai berry juice is no exception.
